AftermarketNews – 5 minute chat with Sheila Stevens, Marketing

Sheila Stevens headshotThe editorial staff at AftermarketNews selected Sheila Stevens, aftermarket industry marketing professional, in a 5-minute chat about her career at ATEQ. The interview was conducted by Melanie Sayre, AftermarketNews editor.

What was your first job in the industry?

I started my career in the aftermarket in March 2014 as the first marketing position hired at ATEQ in North America. When hired, I held responsibility for all three divisions, which included leak testing, aviation and TPMS. My position responsibilities focused on increasing the presence and awareness of its tools and equipment through digital and print marketing and communication efforts. In 2016, my position shifted to focus on the TPMS division, and in the past two years, we have built the ATEQ marketing team in North America to a strong team of three.

What do you like best about your current position?

The environment at ATEQ allows me to do what I am passionate about: marketing our products and communicating to our audience while working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. ATEQ has always trusted me to be creative, while sometimes in non-conventional ways, and I love that each day poses a new experience.

Did you initially intend to pursue a career in the aftermarket? If not, what drew you to the industry and what keeps you here?

Being from the Detroit-area, I’ve always had a soft spot for the auto industry because most of my family have (or had) automotive careers. Growing up, they shared their shop stories with me, and I always admired their knowledge and experiences. Once I was offered to take over the TPMS division’s marketing responsibilities, I learned more about how aftermarket TPMS tools function and how they impact the industry — and I was hooked.

What do you do when not at work?

I love to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle, and frequently explore outdoor activities, especially in Northern Michigan. I have recently taken up running as a hobby, and have involved my family and friends in many 5K races. I am currently training for the Detroit Half Marathon in October, which will be the longest race I’ve participated in.

What one word best sums up your personality?

I would say, “savvy.” I am quick on my feet, eager to learn and try to be a valuable asset in everything I am passionate about.

Who was your childhood hero?

My childhood hero was absolutely my dad. He is the hardest-working person I know, and still in my 30s, he’s the first person I call for advice in business and personal. He always pushed me to work very hard, never quit, never be taken advantage of and always be proud of what I do in life. During tough situations in my life, my dad has always taught me how to get back on my feet with a smile on my face, and move on. To this day, people tell me that I am a tough cookie, and I owe all of that to him.

Who is on your dream dinner party guest list?

It would be an honor to meet and dine with Mary Barra. As the first female CEO of a major vehicle manufacturer, she’s a powerful and influential woman. I would love to sit with her and pick her brain and learn about her path to growth and success.
