After the TREAD Act was mandated in 2007, all vehicles manufactured in the United States beginning in 2008, must be installed with direct or indirect TPMS systems.

The Audi A4 (S4 8E B6, S4 8E B7, S4 8K B7) is manufactured with an indirect and a direct TPMS system, depending on the year. Direct TPMS has TPMS sensors installed in the wheel; if one or more tires indicate low tire pressure, the TPMS sensors will transfer the information to the vehicle’s ECU. An indicator light (low-line TPMS system) or each tire pressure will show on the dash (high-line TPMS system). The indirect TPMS system does not have TPMS sensors in the wheel; TPMS is measured by wheel speed through the ABS system.

Audi/A4-S4, 8K D8, indirect vs direct TPMS system

The Audi A4 model 8K DK was manufactured as a direct system in the beginning of the manufacturing year, then it switched to an indirect system mid-year, and as of 2019, it is still manufactured as an indirect TPMS system. To determine whether you have an indirect or direct TPMS system, try these troubleshooting tips.

1. If you have a VT56, use the VIN barcode scanner to detect the Make, Model, and Year. The vehicle will display INDIRECT if it is an indirect system.
