VIDEO: When do I need to program a TPMS sensor?
When a TPMS sensor needs to be replaced in a vehicle with direct-TPMS, you need a new one to replace it. A sensor will need to be replaced if the sensor battery dies or if the sensor breaks or has corrosion or damage. You can choose an OEM sensor or an aftermarket or Programmable sensor to replace the old sensor. When an aftermarket TPMS sensor is chosen, you must copy, clone or create new sensor IDs. You can use a TPMS tool such as the VT36, VT55, or VT56 to program the new sensor.
The sensor ID’s can be copied from the old sensor and cloned to a new sensor or create new sensor IDs to the new sensor IDs. Some aftermarket or Programmable sensors require installation with proper PSI before programming
If the ID’s were not changed in the process, as in when you retrieved the old sensor ID’s, or copied them, you may not need to perform a TPMS relearn. However, if you create a new sensor, you must perform a TPMS relearn procedure so the vehicle’s ECU can learn the new ID’s.
